The Lives of Man

By Imam Al-Haddad

This book gives a detailed explanation of the five stages of man. The first stage occurs before man is born, when inside the mother’s womb. During this process, man gradually forgets his place to serve God. The next stage of life happens in this dunia, after man is born. This is the most important stage, as it is the time in which man will be tested on his actions, despite the very short time span. After man dies, he appears in the Intermediate Realm, or the third stage of life. This stage is the life in which man has to wait in his grave, either blessed or tormented, until the Day of Judgment. When the Day does come, the fourth stage of life occurs. The dead shall be resurrected and all of mankind will be brought by angels to the land where God will judge each man individually about his actions in the second life. There will be a bridge as narrow as a hair and as light as a grain of corn that leads to the gardens of heaven, while underneath it is the roaring fires of hell. Some will cross the bridge with great ease, some will trudge across carefully, and others will fall down at the first step, all depending on how good they were in this dunia. The fifth stage is the eternal life; man will either enjoy the endless joys of heaven or suffer the unbearable torments of hell forever.

When I first read the book, I was pretty surprised when I found out about the many temptations that man has to overcome in the second stage of life. I even felt nervous after reading that once man reaches old age, he loses all mental focus and senses. However, the stage I am most astounded by is the fourth life, the Day of Judgment. I was at first disgusted at the appearances man will take if he does not do good in this dunia. Then I felt very disturbed at the idea of the bridge that will appear over hell. Regardless, I found the information in this book really helpful, and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about the five stages of man.
